The Sun tarot card meaning
XIX · Upright · Clarity · Vitality · Joy
The Sun represents joy, openness and the ease of feeling comfortable in your own life. Its warmth belongs to moments when you can enjoy something without immediately questioning whether you deserve it or how long it will last. Good experiences deserve your attention too.
Upright meaning
The Sun represents joy, vitality and the freedom of coming into the light. There is warmth in being able to show who you are, enjoy what you have made and share something good without immediately looking for what comes next.
Its direct light gives this card an open, generous character. Things can feel simpler when appreciation is spoken and progress is allowed to count. The Sun invites you to participate in what brings life to your days: affection, play, creative expression or the pleasure of a moment you want to remember.
The challenge within this card
The wish to keep everything bright can make a complicated feeling difficult to admit. You may perform happiness or hurry past a concern because it seems out of place. Joy has more room to breathe when it does not have to represent the whole of your experience.
The Sun in love and relationships
Sometimes a relationship needs a pleasant afternoon more than another discussion about how it is going. Enjoy an activity together, say what you appreciate and notice when you feel at ease. Being openly glad of each other's company is a meaningful form of closeness.
A question for you
When do we feel most at ease together?
The Sun in work and career
If you finish something and immediately look for what you could have done better, satisfaction never gets much time to settle. Recognise what worked and the people who helped. Let yourself enjoy the achievement before moving on to the next demand.
A question for you
What have I done well that I have barely acknowledged?
The Sun during change
A new place or routine can begin to feel like yours through a surprisingly ordinary moment. You find your way without thinking, laugh with someone new or enjoy a familiar task. Let these small pleasures count, even while other parts of the change remain difficult.
A question for you
What part of this new life am I beginning to enjoy?

Tradition and our interpretation
The enlarged sun is the principal symbol. The RWS child, white horse and red banner are intentionally omitted; direct light, open space and living landscape express clarity, vitality and joy.
Our contemporary interpretation draws on the Rider–Waite–Smith tradition. Read Waite’s chapter on The Sun.
